The premise
Ninety-five percent of these books is true history about real American heroes. The other five percent is the twist: in this timeline the Germans went back and took ten of them off the board before they could matter.
Two kids have to learn everything about those men — really learn it — to go back and put them where they belong. And I'm in them, as a side character. You'll have to read the rest to find out why.
Forty confirmed kills over the Pacific, more than any American pilot before or since. He flew a P-38 with his girlfriend Marge's face painted on the nose, and received the Medal of Honor in December 1944.
He cut the glass nose off B-25 bombers and packed the space with .50 caliber machine guns, turning level bombers into strafers. Those planes destroyed a Japanese troop convoy in the Bismarck Sea while his wife and four children were held in an internment camp in the Philippines.
The highest confirmed tank-kill count of any American tanker, run up in eighty-one days of combat in a Sherman he named In the Mood. He lost a leg near Aachen in December 1944, in the third tank shot out from under him.
He won five Olympic gold medals for shooting in 1920, then took two battleships into a night action off Guadalcanal in November 1942. His gunners wrecked the Kirishima in about seven minutes, and the Japanese scuttled it the next morning.

An American who ran resistance networks in occupied France on a wooden leg she called Cuthbert. The Gestapo hunted her as the limping lady; she escaped over the Pyrenees on foot in the winter of 1942 and went back in 1944.
Eighteen men of a reconnaissance platoon dug in on a ridge at Lanzerath on the first morning of the Battle of the Bulge and held off a German paratrooper battalion until dark. All of them were captured, and the platoon was not decorated until 1981.
At Holtzwihr in January 1945 he climbed onto a burning tank destroyer alone and worked its machine gun against advancing German infantry while calling artillery down close to his own position. He was nineteen, and finished the war as the most decorated American soldier of it.
