Discussing the Election with Your Children

Discussing the Election with Your Children

Last night, many of us gathered with our children, extended families, and friends to watch as votes were counted nationwide in this historic 2024 election. Early this morning, Donald Trump secured 277 electoral votes, becoming the 47th President of the United States. At BRAVE, we want to take a moment to acknowledge that God is in control of our rulers and authorities, and we are thankful for a clear outcome.

Leading up to this moment, we all experienced turbulent emotions—concerns over election integrity, frustrations with news and social media platforms, and anxiety about our nation’s future. This season has required us to constantly remember that our foundation isn’t built on politics, but on Christ.

Now that the election has come to a close, here are some ways to guide conversations with your children about the election and our new president:

1. Explain that God is always in control.

Talk with your kids about God’s sovereignty. He is in control of who becomes our president and all other positions of authority. Whether our nation swung blue or red, God would accomplish His will. Discuss how different leaders may come and go, but God’s love and care for us is constant. “He changes times and seasons; he removes kings and sets up kings.” Daniel 2:21

2. Teach respect, but remind your children that God is the ultimate authority.

Explain to your children that we respect our leaders because of their positions in authority over us; however, we ultimately submit to God and His word above all. Depending on age-appropriateness, discuss as a family the values and policies leaders support in comparison to what God teaches in Scripture. “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.” Micah 6:8

3. Pray as a family for our country.

Prayer is powerful. This election season was a vivid reminder that we should be fervent in our prayers for our nation’s leaders. Gather as a family to pray for our country and our new president. “I urge then first of all that petitions, prayers, intercession, and thanksgiving be made for all people for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.” 1 Timothy 2:1-2

At BRAVE, we are here to support your family’s journey and to provide resources that guide you in building a firm foundation of faith.
